An Interview with Boni, a Producer who lives in Germany

Boni Hinton

The Beat Maker

Boni is originally from St Louis Mo. He grew up between Atlanta, and St. Louis, but he likes to say he’s more of an International kind of person or Musician, Producer, Artist. Boni has been Producing Artist, from America to Africa to Europe.

Boni lived in Atlanta for about 10 years, and that’s where he really started to develop his production style.  When he arrived in Atlanta, he was playing bass, guitar, and Keys on Bass Tracks, for Hip-Hop Records with Artist such as; KILO, Hard Boyz, Gangster Pat, Skinny Pimp, A Dam Shame, Loose Screws, Goodie Mob, which he received a GOLD record for Still Standing, a song Its just About Over, featuring the band he played in at that time called Wild Peach. One of the most popular alternative acts in Atlanta, who Are currently the Touring Band. The Band plays for OUTKAST.

Boni produced a few records with a very popular underground group from Atlanta, called GHETTOMAFIA. This group consistently sold more than 300,000, units without Radio airplay, their biggest hit was a song produced by Boni called “Straight From Da Dec”, this particular song took the group to a whole other level, which they received Mad Airplay. During this time it was a radio DJ name Greg Street who broke the song, then all the rest of the stations started to add it to their rotation list, Boni recalls. He went on to say that within months UNIVERSAL was calling him, wanting to sign the Group; they had gotten the record on there Desk, because it was an unsigned act getting all this play. The group was picked up on Sound Scan. This record was after the group left their first independent label called Power Records. However Boni continued, because of shady business dealings he didn’t or couldn’t collect a lot of the royalties that were due to him. This particular record eventually ended up with some independent Label in L.A. called Fully Loaded.

Boni says “All this happen because I nor the group at the time had any kind of AGREEMENT with each other, I was MAINLY in it for the Love of THE ART and playing live, but this particular single was ground breaking, because of how they were rapping, and then You Had Like this Real Bluesy Guitar Playing with wah wah guitars and real instruments, all Played Live By Me”. I remember recording that record in my home studio in Atlanta, I never thought it was going to be such a Huge Song in ATL. After all this Shit wit Sour I was kind of Pissed but to Keep my self PEACEFUL some friends suggested that I should come on tour with them to Europe.  When I land in Gran Canara SPAIN in the Hot SUN in January, I was playing 6 nights a week getting PAID and LAID. The Island looks like a PARADISE, I can truly say I lost track of time and forgot all about getting a lawyer to chase behind that MONEY FROM THOSE PRODUCTIONS I had done, basically I said FUCK IT, God has another PLAN FOR ME.

Then he said to me Valerie, I’m sorry this could be a Book, its getting long, I’ll try to make it short. Well I started to meet people from all over the WORLD, one thing led to another, when the Gig on the island finished me and one of the guys in the group decided to take a Trip to SWEDEN. That’s how I met GERRY-G. He saw me playing and we always had a part in the show where we let some one from the audience get on STAGE and do there THING, it was GREAT. So we made a few plans to get in the studio and continue doing a few things, until we came up with some of his current beats.

In Sweden is where I became good friends with a lot of guys who are originally from Africa which also leads to my Next JOURNEY, back to Africa, where I was neighbor to Neneh Cherry’s Dad, and we use to sit and talk about so many things. I never knew Neneh-Cherry's mother was from Sweden. He asked if I remembered the song Buffalo Stance, also Eagle Eye Cherry?  Eventually he continued,  we hooked it up where I would be taking My first Trip to AFRICA, I can’t tell you Valerie how being a Black African-American, and you know the story, going back to SEE FIRST HAND WHAT AFRICA IS REALLY LIKE, it’s true they have PROBLEMS but for me the FEELING and WARMTH and kindest and Joy and Happiness that is VIBRATING FROM THE PEOPLE and the LAND it’s a very Special place, I Can say the Rhythm of the Body and  my own Spirituality seem to have changed when I was there. Every morning you feel so full of life and energy, but the greatest JOY was when I got there I met some of the TOP Swahili Hip-hop Artist, and they asked me to PRODUCE some tracks for them. Not was I only in Africa for my first time, but I was Producing, Music for Swahili Artist, and being called to Play on some different artist records, this was a lot more than I’d expected.

The first Group who had just won in a Coca-Cola sponsored talent contest, in which more than 2000 artist had competed, also another popular artist from Tanzania, Renee Lamira, Mr. Paul, Jose, A.Y. and T.ID. The great thing I noticed about African Market it’s so open. You can write a song today and go down to the Radio Station and give it to the DJ, and tomorrow it’s playing all day. However since these countries are still developing, you don’t have agencies that collect Performance Royalties for Air Play, but it’s being set up. The great thing is the same Stage or Concert Hall I performed in when I was there, is the same one J-Zay, Memphis Bleek, Snoop Dogg, Loon, Akon, all performed in. In Front of 10,000 people because that’s the maximum amount of people this Hall called Diamonds can hold, it’s located in Dar Es Salaam Tanzania.

Currently there I have two Video’s that have been getting lots of Airplay, One song is called ROLE CALL and another one is called TAXI HEY. Now I’m working on some Productions here in Germany, and playing; last week I was in PARIS, very interesting PLACE lots of French speaking Africans, very diverse culture. After this interview I felt that I’d travel the world with this bright young producer. In closing I’d say keep up the great work young brother it’s a pleasure and honor to know you.

Stay tuned Boni’s tracks will be featured soon…
